LOMPOC, Calif. - Will the Central Coast see the Lompoc Space Center project take off? Or will it have to abort mission?

Lompoc Mayor John Linn still says it's a go for the space center, but many questions still remain unanswered

"I'm surprised at how far they've gotten," says Linn, regarding the Green2Gold organization that is heading the project. "Very pleasantly surprised. They are doing very well."

The long awaited business plan was submitted by the organization about 2 weeks ago and is still under review by a consultant for the city. Previously, the group needed a time extension to send in the business review. The 70-page document outlines various components of the project.

"It says where they would be housed," says Linn. "What timeframe, 1st phase, 2nd phase, 8th phase, when all these things would come on board."

According to Linn, once the consultant approves the business review, Green2Gold will need to submit a funding plan.

"When the funding plan is in hand, I think we'll have more confidence," says Linn.

Linn says he expects the project to be around $200 million and cover 100 acres near the Lompoc Valley Allan Hancock College campus.

Linn also said the city is not putting any money into the project, aside from the land near the campus. A director for Green2Gold said funding will not require taxpayer support. But already, a strong effort to fund the project is already underway.

Alan Tratner, International Director for Green2Gold, says, "I can tell you that we have come into the tens of millions of dollars identified as potential funding sources."

According to the mayor, the project will probably take 10 to 12 years to complete. He said best case scenario, the first phase of the project would be completed by the fall of 2014.
